Tirupati: Rich tributes were paid to former Chief Minister and legendary actor NT Rama Rao on the occasion of his 97th birth anniversary here on Thursday.

TDP activists led by Telugu Yuvatha district secretary Sridhar Varma garlanded the NTR statue after performing Abhishekam with milk to the statue at Town Club Circle in the city. Former TUDA chairman G Narasimha Yadav, Sanjay and other leaders also participated.

Addressing the gathering on the occasion, Sridhar Varma said that Rama Rao will remain forever in the hearts of weaker sections and women for his outstanding contribution for their development.

It was NTR who strove for weaker sections to get recognition politically by giving priority to them in the party and government posts.

The women were able to get property right to ancestral property on par with men, Sridhar Varma said.

NTR had a special attachment with the pilgrim city Tirupati and was responsible for its all-round development by setting up many premier institutions including BIRRD hospital and Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam, the TDP leader pointed out.

The birth anniversary was also observed in Sri Padmavathi Mahila Viswa Vidyalayam (SPMVV). Vice-Chancellor Prof D Jamuna, Rector Prof K Sandhyarani, Registrar Prof DM Mamatha and others garlanded the statue of Rama Rao in the women university campus.

On the occasion, Vice- Chancellor Jamuna said the women university was the brain child of Rama Rao who was keen on women development through education.

Due to the foresight of Rama Rao, thousands of women got the opportunity for higher education paving the path for their bright future, she said paying glorious tributes to Rama Rao.
