In a bid to do away with manual scavenging, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) acquired Bandicoot Robotic Manhole Desilting Machine for use in the West Zone.

Hyderabad: In a bid to do away with manual scavenging, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) acquired Bandicoot Robotic Manhole Desilting Machine for use in the West Zone. The machine was procured, thanks to Rs 32 lakh CSR contribution from Raheja Corp.

  1. About 30% of Bandicoot Robotic Manhole Desilting Machine is made up of carbon fiber reinforced polymer
  2. It is equipped with 4 advanced cameras that could be used during the day as well as night
  3. Bandicoot is also enabled with poisonous gas detectors to provide additional safety to the operator

Mayor Bonthu Rammohan inaugurated the machine at NAC road in Madhapur. MLA A Gandhi, corporator Jagadeeshwar Goud and zonal commissioner Harichandana Dasari were present.

The Supreme Court issued guidelines to all the urban local bodies in India to adopt new technologies for cleaning of manholes and septic tanks and complete ban on manual scavenging.

The machine is made with light weight carbon fiber body. 30% of bandicoot body is made up of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP). The machine is equipped with four advanced cameras that could be used during the day as well as night.

Bandicoot is also enabled with poisonous gas detectors to provide additional safety to the operator from gases like methane, hydrogen sulphide and carbon monoxide.

What is more, an option for smart operation assistance helps operator to quickly learn how to operate robot and carry out the cleaning operations skillfully. Initially, Bandicoot robotic manhole desilting machine would be used for operations in the Serilingampally zone.
