Hyderabad: Hyderabad is likely to have underground dust/garbage bins very soon, if one goes by the resolve of the GHMC. Commissioner Dana Kishore asked civic officials on Tuesday to implement the project at the earliest. Though the standing committee has approved the proposal to establish underground dust bins in the city way back in 2017, no initiative had been taken to establish them yet.

GHMC is going to take this up under a pilot project and the bins will be set up with help from corporate companies as part of their corporate social responsibility. These bins will be equipped with sensors. The capacity of each bin will be 1.5 tonnes and an operator from office can track the quantum of garbage dumped. Once the bin is full, an alert will be issued to the operator, who can direct a driver to empty the bin.

The major part of the bin will be under the ground with an inlet to drop the waste. Once the underground bin is full, it will be lifted out by specially designed vehicles and emptied by opening the bottom flaps without any leakage or overflow of the waste. This helps faster collection with minimum physical contact with the waste. Already Delhi, Surat and Mumbai cities have established these bins.

These underground bins would have no bad odour emanating from them as they are completely closed system with no overflowing of waste and also vandalism, theft, burnt or breaking them are reduced. The Commissioner said that the GHMC was in the process of setting up underground dustbins in the city.

Two areas would be identified in each circle. More vehicles would be taken up for the garbage collection and electric vehicles would be pressed into service in the next four months. The Commissioner also suggested to the officials to take action to supply cloth bags to each household as part of a ban on plastic.
