Hyderabad: Many lakes in dire need of restoration, protection
Activists allege that 50% of water bodies encroached; Demand fencing of lakes to stop encroachments
Saroornagar: Several lakes in the city and outskirts remain unprotected and activists who are engaged in cleaning works have demanded that the authorities sit up and take notice of increasing encroachments. They demand fencing of all water bodies to ensure their protection.
Many lakes including Chengicherla, or Chintalkunta Cheruvu, Sudhakunta, Pochammakunta, Medikuntalake ,Mundikunta lake, AnumulaKunta lake, Saroornagar Lake and some lakes in Serilingampally circle were lifelines for local residents, but today these lakes are unprotected and neglected by the State government . Even though a few social activities took up cleaning works of these lakes and tried to restore them, lack of support from government and public has slowly turned the lakes into pitiable condition.
The social activists urged the officials concerned to fence the lakes to stop encroachments. Sadly, the land sharks have usurped almost 50 percent of all the lake areas. The lakes are also turning into cesspools due to illegal inflows of sewage water.
"The official apathy has resulted in diverting untreated water and dumping of debris into the lakes thus choking them. It is not only creating nuisance but also affecting the human lives and degrading the biodiversity. The Irrigation department, HMWSSB, GHMC and Pollution Control board are the major stakeholders in protecting the lakes and environment. If we do not conserve our environment and resources then it we will causing a great harm and loss to the future generations," said Vinay Vangala , social worker.
"We have sent many representations for restoration of the lakes at Serilingampally circle. Our NGO is trying to restore MundikuntaLake but we are facing hardships due to lack of cooperation from GHMC and government. While the High Court is directing the authorities to restore the lakes and stop illegal construction works on FTL of water bodies, the concerned authorities were only giving false promises on restoration of lakes, said Pradeeep, the convener of SOUL.
"For the past many years we have been trying to restore the lakes and sent many representations. But the encroachments continue blatantly. To stop this the irrigation department should fence all the lakes," said Prashanth, a volunteer of Helping Hands Humanity. When The Hans India team tried to contact the concerned officials there was no response.
