New Delhi: The NDA government clarified in the Lok Sabha that there were no plans for a countrywide National Register of Citizens (NRC), as of now. The Minister of State for Home Affairs, Nityanand Rai gave this response while clarifying the stance of the Modi government on NRC.

The decision will mark a major step back on the part of the NDA government in the wake of widespread protests against Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR).

The written reply from the Union Minister of State for Home is a significant climbdown also because Union Home Minister Amit Shah had earlier said that nationwide NRC would be conducted.

The government received a series of questions on NRC, including timeline, reasons and whether responses from state governments had been received by the Central government. In the light of this reply from the government, the entire controversy takes a new turn.

Congress leader Brajesh Kalappa described the government response as a U-turn and demanded a total scrapping of CAA, NRC and NPR. While the Congress welcomes this decision, there should be a total rollback of all three measures, he added.
