Revival of Telugu programmes on AIR-Chennai
Chennai: Keeping in view the increasing importance of growing Telugu population here, All India Radio (AIR)-Chennai, has decided to revive the past glory of Telugu programmes of its early days. It may be recalled that it was AIR-Madras, which was a launching pad for veteran singers and music directors like Ghantasala, S Rajeswara Rao, Balanthrapu Rajani Kantha Rao Vinjamuri Anasuya Devi and poets and writers like Devulapali Krishna Sastry, Sri Sri, Arudra, Athreya, Mullapudi Venkata Ramana, Nanduri Ramamohana Rao, Gollapudi Maruthi Rao and Malathi Chendur. Moreover, it was Madras All India Radio that had brought out important literary works and music compositions, which enriched Telugu language and culture.
After several years, the Government decided to revive Telugu programmes. Nagasuri Venugopal, Programme Executive for Telugu department of AIR, said that revival of Telugu progammes evoked good response from Telugu community. The revived Telugu programmes: Channel B 294 meters, 1017 KHz: Mallepudanda from September 1, Penneti Kathalu (stories by P Ramakrishna Reddy) from August 27, Priya Athidhi, Srotalatho Mukhamukhi, Annamayya Pada Gopuram, Chitra Sangeetham and Telugu Sourabham.
