In order to combat online harassment, Instagram, the photo sharing app, will soon rollout 'high volume comment threads' that allows users to filter abusive comments or completely turn off the comments section altogether.

The new option will also allow users to curb comments on post by post basis which ensures that their picture account remains free from abuses. "Our goal is to make Instagram a friendly, fun and, most importantly, safe place for self expression," said Instagram's head of public policy, Nicky Jackson Colaco, in a statement quoted by The Washington Post.

"We have slowly begun to offer accounts with high volume comment threads the option to moderate their comment experience. As we learn, we look forward to improving the comment experience for our broader community," the statement read.

Although Instagram has its own general policies for what it considers as acceptable speech, the new option will give users the autonomy to decide on whether a comment deserves to be posted or not.

The decision comes a month after Instagram launched 'comment moderation' tool for business accounts which lets the users to block offensive words and phrases.
