In the coming two decades people would see the convergence of technology, especially nanotechnology, playing a pivotal role in the field of ophthalmology, said former President Dr APJ Abdul Kalam.

He was speaking at the inaugural function of the Srujana Centre for Innovation at LV Prasad Eye Institute (LVPEI) here on Friday.

The new innovation centre is a joint initiative of LVPEI and Camera Culture group in collaboration with Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Lab at Cambridge, USA and funded through the support of Infotech Enterprises Endowment for Innovation in Eye Care. Applauding the idea of Srujana and LVPEI’s research work with regard to eye care, Kalam said, “Inventions and discoveries will emanate from young minds if they imagine big and work hard. It is not enough for youth having big goals but mentors are also essential for young minds.” Kalam interacted with the students and enquired about their innovative works in developing eye care solutions in India and all over the world. Dr GN Rao, Founder-Chairman, LVPEI, said the genesis of innovation centre was from “Engineering the Eye” workshop held in July 2013 with MIT Media Lab, for which LVPEI was the ophthalmology partner. The workshop culminated in a realisation that the combination of clinicians, engineers and designers would form a great force that can address several eye care problems in developing nations.

He said, the aim of starting Srujana Innovative Centre was to provide the best quality eye care with the state-of-art technology to diagnose and provide efficient treatment to all kinds of blindness on time to all people including those living in remote areas.
