A newly-married couple of Alloor village in Kothapatnam mandal of Prakasam district, Sukanya and Kiran, has allegedly disappeared fearing for their lives, following alleged harassment by local police.

Sukanya, an engineering graduate, and Kiran, who holds a small job in Hyderabad, belonging to the same village, got married on October 23 in Guntur against the wishes of her elders, because of their close relationship as cousins. They sent her to Mumbai to stay with her uncle. She allegedly ran away before getting married.

The girl’s parents lodged a complaint with the Kothapatnam police alleging her kidnap. Taking advantage, SI Srinivas Rao allegedly harassed Kiran’s family. Following this, the young couple filed a statement with the police, claiming they got married willingly as they were majors.

The SI allegedly declined to recognize the marriage contending that it was invalid. He forced them to come to the police station for two or three days, detained Kiran and sent Sukanya to Ongole Two Town Police Station. Rao ’harassed’ his parents with a motive to leave the young man alone.

After some women’s organisations intervened, he ‘forced’ Sukanya to give statement before Kothapatnam MRO that she willingly left the house and got married, while keeping her with an NGO here. After three days, the police on November 9 at 9 pm on the pretext of sending her to Mumbai following ‘kidnap’, took Sukanya out of NGO. Unable to know her whereabouts, Kiran, and representatives of NGO and women’s organisations are spending agonizing days. He is fearing a threat to his life following ‘threats’ by SI of filing false cases against his family members.

Following a complaint lodged by T Shobha Rani, joint secretary, AP Socialist Forum, Ongole the AP State Human Rights Commission on November 8 directed Prakasam SP to submit a report by December 23, when the issue has been listed.
