Hyderabad: In order to avoid fatal accidents, The AP State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is all set to introduce various safety measures for its passengers, especially in the long journey luxury buses.
Like flight stewards in aircrafts before setting on journey, the APSRTC drivers of air-conditioned buses – Indra, Garuda, Garuda Plus – will henceforth give a two-minute live demonstration on emergency exit measures, position of hammers to break open windows, and placement of fire extinguishers in the bus. This apart, a three-minute video about the emergency measures would also be played on television sets in all AC buses, informed an official of APSRTC.
As part of these measures, over 1,500 drivers of AC buses were being given special training at the zonal staff training institutes on how to introduce themselves to passengers and on operation of fire extinguishers. The corporation has also procured about 200 hammers and fire extinguishers to install them in all AC buses, which were not provided with them earlier. A K Khan, Managing Director and Vice-Chairman, APSRTC, issued a circular to its management to provide hammers and fire extinguishers in the luxury buses, soon after the spine-chilling Mahabubnagar bus incident which claimed 45 lives. There are over 450 AC buses, including Garuda, Vennela sleeper, Indra and others plying in the capital. Authorities plan to install six hammers and two fire extinguishers in each Garuda Plus bus in different locations. Likewise, four hammers and two fire extinguishers will be provided in Garuda and Vennela sleeper buses. In Indra buses, two hammers and one fire extinguisher will be provided.
