Hyderabad: Giving an impetus to higher education in the State, the Rashtriya Uchchtar Siksha Abhiyan (RUSA) scheme is likely to be taken off from the next academic year in full measure. A meeting of Vice-Chancellors of all the 32 State Universities along with senior officials of the State government, held under the aegis of State Council of Higher Education (APSCHE), on Saturday discussed the guidelines of RUSA threadbare.
Speaking to media persons after the meeting, Chairman of APSCHE Prof L Venugopala Reddy said that the State expects funds to the tune of Rs 1,000 crore under RUSA in the next three years. “The allocation of funds for all the varsities and colleges, institutions of higher education across the country for the next three years is Rs 22,000 crore. I expect that a sum of Rs 1000 crore may be given to us, but it is only a preliminary estimate. It all depends on our report and needs” he said. Out of this amount, 65 per cent is Central government share and the remaining 35 per cent would be adjusted by the State government. Prof LV Reddy also said that AP may be allowed to recruit nearly 500 out of 5,000 teaching posts across the country during this period.
The Council authorities have explained the salient points of RUSA scheme to the vice-chancellors and asked them to submit their reports by December 20. A special cell headed by APSCHE vice - chairman Vijaya Prakash has been formed to coordinate between the Universities and the Centre, Prof LV Reddy informed. Another important decision taken at the VCs meet was doubling the General Enrolment Ratio (GER) by 2020.
There are 32 varsities, 2 state-level institutes, 2,166 colleges offering conventional courses, nearly 4,000 professional colleges are now eligible for RUSA grant.
