Concerns over Medaram bridge, Bridge across Jampannavagu stream. They directed the contractor K Sudarshan Reddy to finish the work within the set deadline and also ensure quality of the construction

Medaram (Warangal): Clouds of doubt were cast over the completion of ongoing construction of a bridge across Jampannavagu stream at Medaram village of Tadwai mandal.

The state government has allocated Rs 2.90 crore for the construction of the bridge in view of the biannual Medaram Sammakka Saralamma Jatara 2014. It might be noted that a bridge was already constructed across the stream.

The district administration proposed to build the bridge in order to accommodate increasing number of devotees arriving at Medaram with every passing jatara. This time it was estimated that about one crore devotees would visit the temple.

Against this backdrop, the district administration which took the matter prestigiously has launched the construction of the bridge that would have 15 pillars. It was planned to complete the construction of the bridge in 36 days to break record of 37 days the duration that took to complete the existing bridge.

It is worth recalling that in 2002 during the TDP regime, the existing bridge was built in 37 days with an expenditure of Rs 1.90 crore. The then District Collector Prabhakar Reddy took a lot of pains and camped at Medaram to complete the bridge construction, facing severe opposition from the Maoist activists.

Union Minister P Balram Naik, district in-charge minister R Venkat Reddy, BC welfare Minister B Saraiah, government chief whip G V Ramana Reddy, MP S Rajaiah and local MLA Seetakka visited the construction site on Saturday along with the District Collector G Kishan and Rural Superintendent of Police L Kalidas.

They directed the contractor K Sudarshan Reddy to finish the work within the set deadline and also ensure quality of the construction. Incidentally, the old bridge was also constructed by the same contractor. But the oozing of water from the stream bed during the construction has been causing great difficulty in executing the works and that in turn was leading to doubts over its completion in time. Nevertheless, the contractor is hopeful of finishing it in 36 days.
