Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad will present honorary doctorate to well-known social activist Aruna Roy at its campus on January 9. Roy will later deliver a lecture on ‘Democratic Governance – A Contemporary Discourse’. Aruna, who was a Ramon Magsaysay Award winner for community leadership in 2010, could not turn up to receive the honoris causa during the University’s convocation held in October last.

An IAS officer from 1968 to 1974, she resigned from her job and devoted time for a social cause. She joined the Social Work and Research Centre (SWRC) in Tilonia, Rajasthan, and founded Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathana (Workers and Peasants Strength Union).
