Hyderabad: Apparently enthused by the public response to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Lok Satta national president Jayaprakash Narayan on Sunday donned the role of a people’s activist and led his party workers in demolishing an encroachment on a public place by a builder.

A marked change was seen in the way the bureaucrat–turned-politician, known for his well-mannered approach to resolution of conflicts, dealt with the issue. Tension gripped Vasanthnagar locality in Kukatpalli, as the Lok Satta activists, armed with shovels and crowbars, plunged into action and pulled down an illegal construction.

Jayaprakash Narayan even got a JCB engaged for the task and personally supervised this demolition drive. He was at the driver’s seat for some time, leading his followers from the front. A builder from the area, with an aim to develop a gated community, raised pillars on a government land, blocking movement of vehicles towards Hi-Tec City.

As it caused severe inconvenience to thousands of commuters and locals who regularly use the route to reach the Cyber Towers, JP got down to the business of razing it in the larger interests of society – the route has been in use by the public for the last 25 years.

Building permission rules do not allow construction of any structure below high tension wires. Despite public uproar, the builder allegedly threatened to foist police cases on them, in connivance with local leaders and government officials. As a last resort, locals took the issue to the notice of Lok Satta Party two months ago. Narayan even spoke to Ranga Reddy District Collector and the officials of GHMC and HMDA department to stall construction.

Although, the officials assured to look into the matter, no action was taken. Narayan finally spoke to the builder concerned a fortnight ago and asked him to remove the encroachment, but in vain.

Speaking to reporters, JP flayed Ranga Reddy Collector for not initiating any action despite the government land being encroached upon by private persons. He called upon the people to support Lok Satta in its fight against land-grabbers, and irregularities by the official machinery.
