New Delhi/Hyderabad: The issue of separate Telangana could cast a shadow over the AICC meeting on Friday with Congress leaders from Seemandhra region threatening to hold a dharna outside the venue over denial of entry to them.
According to party sources, six Congress MPs from the Seemandhra region – Vundavalli Arun Kumar, Sabbam Hari, Rayapati Sambasiva Rao, Sai Pratap, G V Harsha Kumar and L Rajagopal – were denied passes for the All-India Congress Committee (AICC) Session to be held on Friday.
The sources said this step was taken to prevent unseemly incidents in the crucial AICC Session, where the focus is on the larger issue of gearing up the party for the electoral battle ahead. The Congress leadership does not want the tussle in Andhra Pradesh to cast a shadow over the AICC Session.
Taking strong exception to the denial of passes, Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal said that he would go to Delhi and would take up the issue with the party high command. He told the media that it was their right to attend the meeting and no one can deprive them of their right. He said the no-confidence motion they had moved in Lok Sabha was not against Congress Party. It was against the UPA government.
Anakapalle MP Sabbnam Hari said the Congress high command was throttling the internal democracy by not allowing the party MPs to express their opinion on separate statehood for Telangana.
The MPs say that the decision not to allow them entry was an "undemocratic" action of the party leadership. The high command had denied passes without giving any notice to them, they said. They further said, that if the leadership failed to issue them entry passes, they would stage a dharna in front of the Talkatora Stadium, the venue of the AICC meet. However, there was no immediate reaction from AICC on the issue.
The controversy arose after the Seemandhra Congress MPs decided to press for a resolution on keeping Andhra Pradesh united, which was bound to trigger a controversy. Expectedly, the Telangana Congress MPs wanted a resolution to be moved in the AICC to thank Congress President Sonia Gandhi for her decision to create Telangana.
