Tips to become good orators

Hyderabad: A speaker should have the zeal to learn, said Uma Maheswara Rao, Principal of Rachana College for Journalism.

Addressing the participants of the HMTV flagship programme ‘Vakta’ here on Saturday, he told the students to acquire knowledge and not to discard anything.

“Analyse and learn” is the mantra for a good speaker. If you want to be a good speaker start learning and the learning should go on,” he added.

Talking about the importance of reading newspapers, Uma Maheswara Rao said, “Read newspapers regularly than competition success review. One newspaper is like five professors disseminating knowledge. Amass and analyse information. The information might not be useful now but it has an antique value.” Giving tips on how to be an effective speaker, he said a good speaker has to gauge the mood of the audience, their pulse and the environment. “Do not repeat or overlap. Do not go on a monotone. Share a few jokes if possible. When you are speaking to younger audience, narrate your experience. A serious issue should be dealt always in a lighter note,” he said.

He felt that spontaneity, regular reading, pun and symbolic expressions were traits of a good speaker. He asked them to listen to speeches of famous speakers and hinted at Jawarharlal Nehru’s ‘Tryst with Destiny’ speech. He also remarked that among the contemporary politicians Venkaiah Naidu is noted for his wit and humour in his speeches.

“Clear and clean observation, practice and complete information on the topic is the difference between a speaker and informed speaker,” he said as a parting shot.
