Hyderabad: The State Election Commission (SEC) has made elaborate arrangements for the counting of votes for the urban and the rural local bodies on Monday and Tuesday.

Addressing the press here on Sunday, State Election Commissioner P Ramakanth Reddy said that the counting of votes would start from 8 am on Monday. The results of 145 municipalities and 10 corporations would be announced by the afternoon. The counting would take place in 155 centres at 65 places in 22 districts. In order to prevent any untoward incidents, prohibitory orders were clamped and closure of liquor shops was ordered in and around the counting centers on the whole day.

Stating that chairman and vice-chairman of municipalities and mayor and deputy mayor of corporations would be elected through an indirect election, Reddy said the notification for the election of the posts would be released after the announcement of the Assembly and Lok Sabha poll results. Since the legislators are the ex-officio members of the urban local bodies, it is mandatory that the newly elected MLAs and MPs should exercise their votes in the election for mayor and chairman posts.

Reddy said that the results of the ZPTC (Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituency) and MPTC (Mandal Parishad Territorial Constituency) would be declared by Tuesday night because counting of the paper ballots used in the election would consume more time. The elections were held for 16,214 MPTCs and 1,093 ZPTCs in April.

It may be mentioned here that on the directions of the Supreme Court, the State government postponed the counting of votes of the local body elections till the end of Assembly and Lok Sabha elections in the state. The elections for municipalities and Nagarpanchayats were held on March 30 and MPTC-ZPTC polls were conducted in two phases in April.
