Hyderabad: The Union government has decided to allocate 200 MW of extra power to Andhra Pradesh between August 2014 and March 2015 to meet the acute shortage. It will also extend all help and assistance to promote the state as a hub of solar power generation, according to Union Power Minister Piyush Goyal.

Goyal met the AP Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Hyderabad on Sunday and discussed the power situation in the state for two hours.

Speaking to media after the meeting, he said his Ministry would accord special attention to the State to help it successful reach its goal of 24 X 7 power supply to domestic and industrial sectors under Power for All (PFA) scheme launched recently.

He said Andhra Pradesh had been facing severe power shortage, especially after the bifurcation of Telangana. The Union Minister said Naidu had focussed his attention on improving the situation and it led to a fewer power cuts in the State. He was confident that AP could get 500 MW of power supply by September and another 500 MW by January 2015.

The Minister added that the Neeraj Mathur committee, constituted to study the disputes on PPAs between Telangana State and AP, would submit its report shortly. He hoped that the two states would arrive at an amicable solution on sharing of power.
