Hyderabad: The Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Home N Chinarajappa said the disaster management and fire services in the State were being strengthened to prevent loss of life.

The Minister, who held a review meeting with the officials of both the departments on Saturday, later told reporters that National Disaster Management Institutes would be set up at Mangalagiri in Krishna district and at Kakinada in East Godavari district. These institutions would prepare fire and disaster management plans for the State.

“The State government is serious in preventing loss of life during natural calamities and disasters,” he said and added that funds would be pumped at the district-level centres. The disaster management came into full being after Tsunami killed more than 2.5 lakh people. Now advance warning was being given to the people using high end technology and they were being evacuated much in advance. The loss of life was minimal now, he added.

Similarly fire stations would be given facelift and new stations would be added. Out of 175 constituencies in the State, 35 constituencies have no fire stations, he said ruling out privatisations of the fire stations. Portable fire tenders would be installed in places where there is no road connectivity for quick disbursal of vehicles.

Answering a question on whether the State was discussing lifting ban on the Maoists, the Minister said there were no Maoists in the State and hence the government never thought of discussing the ban.

He said the law enforcement department was taking serious action against the smugglers of red sanders and land grabbers. “We will not allow anti-social elements to rule the roost in the State. They will be taken to task and booked as per the law,” he said and added that there was no need for any police reforms.

On the issue of BC status for the Kapus, he said the Chief Minister had categorically said the Kapus would not cut into the existing quota and they would not be affected.
