Telangana, Andhra Pradesh’s Scuffle With RDS Project. The water distribution from the RDS project has become one of the key issues that spoil the post bifurcation relation between the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state.
The water distribution from the RDS project has become one of the key issues that spoil the post bifurcation relation between the Andhra Pradesh and Telangana state. Rajolibanda Diversion Scheme (RDS) project has turned to be the major problem concerning the water distribution. The MLAs of Andhra Pradesh representing the Rayalaseema farmers is not allowing the increase of the height of RDS project, while Telangana wants to go ahead with increasing the height of the RDS project by 1ft. The RDS project has been built on the Tungabhadra River in Karnataka border. A share of 1.5 TMCs to Karnataka and a share of 15.9 TMCs to Telangana were decided from the storing water on the project. The remaining water is allocated for the KC Canal in Kurnool district. The pipes which were laid during the construction of the project have remained open throughout, allowing the continuous outflow of water from the project to Sunkesula Project.
So far, Telangana state or region never got its actual share from this project, in view of the above. Mahabubnagar district which is supposed to receive water for 87,000 acres is not even able to get 40,000 acres. Both Karnataka and Telangana state governments believe that the sludge level in the dam has been increased and hence decide to increase its height. Nevertheless, the same is opposed by Andhra Pradesh state government.
There will not be any negative impact with the increase in height of the RDS project to the water reaching to the Sunkeshula dam. Already the sludge in the RDS dam has been at the level of 4 inches and if it gets increased further by 4 more inches, there will not be even a single drop of water that could be stored in the project. So, it was decided jointly by the erstwhile AP and Karnataka to undertake the process of increasing the height of the dam by 1ft. The same was hindered by Bireddy Rajasekhar Reddy along with his allies. The same is repeating even now. This problem is so simple that could be resolved at irrigation secretaries’ level. However, the entire issue has become a root of distress over a period of time and has been igniting the fire between the two Telugu states.
