Visakhapatnam: The Information and Technology (IT) sector industry on hilltops in this bustling industrial hub has been hit hard by the Hudhud cyclone which ravaged the city. The howling winds blew off rooftops of some of buildings and the glass windowpanes were ripped up.

The striking designs of buildings housing the IT companies on hilltops at Madhuravada offer a breathtaking panoramic view. There are not less than 80 software companies, both big and small, in the industrial hub. Visakhapatnam started attracting IT sector after the previous government established IT special economic zone and incubation centre. The city’s skilled force facilitated the entry of national and international IT firms such as Tech Mahindra, Wipro, IBM, Kenexa and Infotech.

The buildings housing the software companies are designed with big glass windowpanes to give them an attractive look and provide relaxed ambience for the workforce.

When the Hudhud cyclone swept across the city, high velocity wind blew off rooftops of some of the buildings, broke glass windowpanes, tossed out furniture and computers around. In a nutshell, the IT sector was rocked by the cyclone.

Post bifurcation Viskahpatnam was considered to be the IT sector destination. During 2005-2007, software exports from the city increased by almost 90 per cent. The IT exports from the city in 2012 were worth Rs 12,000 crore. The sector provided employment to a little less than 17,000. The sector had set itself a target to increase exports from the city to Rs 15,000 crore. But the Hudhud has damaged the brand image of Visakhapatnam as the IT destination. The loss to the IT industry was estimated to be not less than Rs 300 crore.
