The traffic signal lights, which are being installed at Labbipet Junction, will be the first digitised signals. These signals will work by sensing the traffic density on the road.

As part of a pilot project, the traffic signals will come up at Veterinary Junction on Bandar Road. Work has started at the junction and within two months, the city will get its first digitised traffic signal. The signaling system is being worked upon with funds from public and sponsors.

“As the traffic is growing at a very fast pace in the city there is an urgent need to adjust the traffic control systems to match the vehicular traffic growth. Setting up of digitised traffic signal is one such effort to spruce up the existing traffic management system,” said ACP (traffic) S Srinivas Rao.

“Digitised traffic signals would be user-friendly for vehicular traffic as they would calculate the traffic density on all roads and accordingly give directions to the vehicular traffic. With the digitised traffic signaling system, the sensors installed at the traffic signals would gauge the traffic volume at any given time. Depending upon the number of vehicles, the traffic management system would calculate and give directions accordingly to each side. These sensors would also send information to the control room. The traffic department can also give directions to the traffic through a remote,” S Srinivas Rao added.

The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) is also an official partner in this initiative, and has associated with Efftronics Systems Pvt. Ltd for technological support and Prakash Arts for designing the frames. If the new traffic control system is successful, there are plans to set up similar systems at 150 junctions in the city.

“With increasing vehicle density, it is becoming impossible for us to handle the traffic smoothly. Especially during peak hours we are facing a lot of problems. But the new digital traffic signal system would be helpful in streamlining the traffic,” summed up K Venkataramana, a traffic policeman from the city.
