Hyderabad: The already burdened power consumers with hefty power tariff bills are in for another shock in Andhra Pradesh, as power utilities are gearing up to submit fresh proposals to increase the tariff by at least 75 paise to Rs 1 on each consumed unit from April 1 in 2015-16 financial year.

Following instructions from the AP Electricity Regulatory Commission (APERC) to submit the proposals by December second week, the APTransco asked the APEPDCL (Eastern Power Distrbution Company Limited ) and the APSPDCL (Southern Power Distrbuition Company Limited) to immediately finalise the propsoals. It is mandatory that the power utilities prepare new tariff proposals along with the ARR (Annual Revenue Requirement) which are to be submitted to Commission by the end of December every year. APERC would then finalise the hike by holding a public hearing and seeking suggestions from different bodies including political parties. The APTransco authorities said that the utilities are planning to seek the Commission’s nod to effect a hike to the tune of around Rs 3,000 crore this year. Free power subsidy and increasing power generation have been a huge burden on them for the last 10 years.

Sources said that the revenue requirement for the EPDCL towards power purchase, free power supply and maintenance is about Rs 7,000 crore for the current financial year.

With the hike of tariff , the revenue realisation would rise to Rs 8,000 crore as against Rs 6,000 crore last year. It is expected to spend Rs 6,000 crore on power purchase, Rs 900 crore on distribution and Rs 228 crore for transmission. Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, East Godavari and Weest Godavari districts come under the purview of the EPDCL.

The APSPDCL would seek Rs 9,000 crore revenue. In 2013-14, it reported Rs 1,500 crore revenue deficit due to supply of subsidised power supply to domestic and industrial sectors and free power. The company covers Guntur, Krishna, Prakasham, Nellore, Kadapa, Chittoor, Anantapur and Kurnool districts.
