The Government of India is shortly launching a new Urban Development Mission to support States by handholding them in building infrastructure and services in step with the rapid pace of urbanisation.

Guntur: Joint Collector and Commissioner of Guntur Municipal Corporation (GMC) Sridhar has sent an Underground Drainage Project proposal worth Rs.1300 crore to the Union Ministry of Urban Development and Planning as the city is being covered under the ‘Urban Development Mission’ the pet scheme of Prime Minister Narendra Modi aimed at developing 500 cities and 100 Smart Cities on the basic infrastructure development front including excellent civic conditions, underground drainage and other amenities.

Municipal Commissioner told ‘The Hans India’ that the proposal aimed at providing underground drainage to the entire city including the proposed Greater Guntur Municipal Corporation limits keeping in view the development of the capital region. The GMC was preparing a master plan keeping in view the shape of things to come and the capital region. The proposals are being readied for submitting to the Urban Development Mission under which 500 cities will be developed by providing basic infrastructure facilities.

A new mission mode programme is being designed to take up these activities for 500 cities of the Nation. Private sector participation by way of PPP (Public Private Partnerships) methodology will be encouraged. Under this programme sustainable development of heritage centres will be taken up bringing together urban planning, economic growth and heritage conservation in an inclusive urban local bodies will form part of the Urban Development Mission. Soon Union Minister Venkaiah Naidu will be calling for a meeting of Municipal Commissioners of civic bodies having more than 1 lakh population.

The mission involves transformation of weak urban governance structures into an effective engine of economic growth.
