Kakinada: The people of upland and tribal areas in West Godavari await sanction of Kovvur-Bhadrachalam Road rail line project in the Annual Rail Budget to be presented on February 26. The local people have been persistently demanding clearance of the project.

The demand for the rail connectivity picked up momentum in the last four decades. Former union minister Kavuri Sambasiva Rao representing Eluru and Railway Line Sadhana Samiti of Kothagudem highlighted the need for the project’s clearance. The technical feasibility study was already completed for the project, they noted.

The railway line is a 131-kilometre line which connects Kovvur to Bhadrachalam Road through Koyyalagudem, Buttayagudem, Jangareddigudem and other tribal areas. In addition to this, the upland areas of Chintalapudi and surrounding areas will be benefitted.

The rail line will also bring down the distance between Rajahmundry and Hyderabad by about 75 kilometres as it connects to mainline at Mahabubabad.

The East Godavari and Cocanada Town passengers Association President Y D Rama Rao said that this project not only provides rail connectivity to tribal areas but also helps in lessening the traffic burden on the existing rail lines to Hyderabad and other distant places.

When contacted, Rajya Sabha member from West Godavari, Thota Sitaramalakshmi, said that the importance of this project was highlighted and the need for its clearance was explained to the Railway Minister. The Minister was also asked to clear Narasapuram- Amalapuram- Kotipalli rail line project.
