Rajahmundry: Endowments Department Principal Secretary JSV Prasad on Thursday asked the officials of various departments to expedite works pertaining to Godavari Pushkarams, which would be held in July.Addressing a review meeting on the progress of works with heads of departments at the R&B Guest House here, he said the government requested the NDRF and the Indian Navy to provide speed boats during the Pushkarams. The RTC would be operating 2,000 buses during the mega event.
He said Godavari Pushkarams was a national event and attracts lakhs of pilgrims every day. Hence all departments should implement the plan of action properly, he said. The four-lane bridge across the Godavari river should be completed by the first week of April, he said. Problems relating to gravel and sand would be sorted out by the Collectors, he said.
Prasad said Rajahmundry town should be upgraded to city for the coming event and requested the Police and Revenue departments to take up joint inspection for widening of roads. He also suggested setting up ‘May I Help You’ centres at important places in coordination with various departments.
Schools and colleges in the Pushkarams areas should be provided with toilet facility and these buildings should be used for providing accommodation to the duty staff, he said. The Transport Department should to determine the auto fares and also train the auto drivers to deal gently with pilgrims. Duty staff would be provided training in maintaining good relations with the public, he said.
The Endowments Department Principal Secretary further said expert swimmers and 494 boats would be used to ensure safety of pilgrims at the Ghats. He directed the officials to construct a new Ghat at Rajahmundry for VIPs. Regarding sanitation, he said special drive should be taken up in all the villages well in advance.
Usage of plastic in any form should be avoided during the Pushkarams to prevent pollution of the Godavari river, he added. Endowments Commissioner Y V Anuradha said proposals should be sent to the government to upgrade PHCs and also utilise private medical services during the Pushkarams.
