Hyderabad: Demanding categorisation of Scheduled Castes, hundreds of activists of Madiga Reservation Porata Samithi (MRPS) took out a ‘Chalo Assembly’ rally on Wednesday. Despite heavy police bandobust and traffic restrictions, several activists managed to reach the Assembly gate. The police arrested them and shifted them to various police stations.
Even though the Chalo Assembly programme was scheduled to be held outside the Indira Park, groups of activists managed to sneak into close to the Assembly premises using public transport and other private vehicles. The MRPS activists hoodwinked the police and came in small groups in private vehicles and jumped out of them in front of the Osmania Gate, holding placards and shouted slogans against Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.
The police who were present in large numbers took them into custody and shifted them to different police stations. They demanded that the A P Assembly pass a resolution in favour of categorisation of SCs. They also wanted the resolution to be forwarded to Parliament. In all, three batches of agitators were arrested. An all-women group numbering of 21 activists were picked up near Ravindra Bharati close to Gate One used by the Chief Ministers of both Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
The other two groups comprised of men who tried to get through the barricades at the MLAs’ entry near the main entrance of the Public Gardens. They were promptly arrested even as they tried to attract attention by raising slogans, and taken away in police vans. Founder president of MRPS Manda Krishna Madiga was picked up from a hotel near Lakdi-ka-pul.
Following the call given by Manda Krishna Madiga, members of Madiga Students Front (MSF) in Osmania University also took out a rally from OU Arts College. The police stopped them near the NCC gate.As the students were stopped at the NCC gate by the police, it led to tensions between both the students and the police, resulting in stone pelting by the students. The police arrested the student leaders and took them into custody. They were later shifted to Goshamahal Stadium.
