Vijayawada: Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday said that the Polavaram project was important to the State and had to be completed in the next four years.
He wanted the Central government to take up the works and complete it in four years or give funds to the State to meet the deadline. He said that the State government’s concern was to complete the project within the schedule and clarified that he was not particular whether the Central government gives funds or takes up the project.
“The State’s concern is to complete the project in four years, whether the Centre takes up the work or gives funds to the State is not an issue,” he clarified. The Chief Minister held a meeting with the party MPs and Union Ministers P Ashok Gajapathi Raju and Y S Chowdary. The BJP MPs including the party State president and Visakhapatnam MP, Dr K Haribabu were also present.
The Chief Minister thanked the Central government for merging seven mandals from Telangana with Andhra Pradesh in the Polavaram project area. He expressed confidence that the Centre would extend similar support to the State in completing the project as per schedule.
He asked the MPs to take up the issue with the Centre of releasing Rs 273.53 crore that were spent by the State on Polavaram project. He further said that the Centre had to release Rs 2,051.78 crore for the 2015-16 financial year and requested the MPs to get these funds from the Centre or get an assurance of completing the project in four years.
He also wanted the MPs to get all clearances from the Central government for the project, including the court cases pending against it. This would be possible only if the MPs played an active role and regularly coordinated with the Central government, he added.
Referring to the red sanders issue, the Chief Minister said that the State government had initiated several steps to prevent smuggling of the red sanders. He said that the government has now 3.308 metric tonnes of red sanders logs which are to be sold. He wanted the MPs to take up the issue and get clearance from the Centre to sell these red sanders stocks in foreign market. He said that the government would get better price in the global market for the red sanders.
The Chief Minister also wanted the MPs to lobby with the Central government to get Petroleum University, Tribal University and seek financial support to develop Kakinada, Machilipatnam, Vadarevu, Bhavanapadu, Nakkapalli, Dugarajapatnam, Narsapurm and Ramayapatnam ports in the State.
