Vizianagaram: State government is organising the death centenary of famous Telugu author, poet, social reformer Gurajada Apparao here for two days starting from Sunday. On the first day, cultural programmes like famous ‘Kanyasulkam’ play was staged.

Minister for Housing K Mrinalini inaugurated the programmes. Addressed the gathering at the house of Gurajada Apparao, she said, ‘We all are proud to say that Ananda Gajapathi auditorium belonged to our district. Gurajada was not only a writer, but also a social reformer. He served not only the literary society but also to civil society. His works are worthy even today. He raised his voice against various social evils like ‘Kanyasulkam’ on those days. He opposed the child marriages, which was very common on those days and the parents of children used to marry their children with old persons by taking some money in the name of Kanyasulkam. This was a vulnerable evil of society. Gurajada performed a number of widow marriages and supported widows. He promoted education among women. Now every parent should give equal priority to girl child and promote them towards education and other cultural arts.”

District Collector M M Nayak said that the thoughts and ideology of Gurajada was tremendous and relevant even today.

“We are conducting various programmes on Gurajada to re-introduce him to the present generation. His name and fame will not be perished from the hearts of literary lovers forever. The house in which the great poet used to live will be handed over to archeology department and it will be developed as a monument. We will bring all his works under one roof and we will make his house as a great library with the help of government,” the Collector said.

Prominent Telugu ‘Avadhani’ Garikipati Narasimha Rao said, “This generation should read the works of Gurajada and should walk in the foot prints of that great man. We are expecting that great people like Gurajada should come forward to drive the society in a right way. We should follow our traditions and customs, which are enriched with moral values and ethics.” Later, stage shows were performed at Ananda Gajapathi auditorium on Kanyasulkam and Puttadi Bomma.

A large number of literary lovers and VIPs participated in the programmes.
