CM seeks Centre help to set up six medical colleges in State

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu appealed to Union Health Minister J P Nadda to extend cooperation to set up 6 medical colleges in Andhra Pradesh under the Prime Minister’s Swasthya Suraksha Yojana (PMSSY). The Union Minister visited the city on Saturday to lay foundation for AIIMS at Mangalagiri and met the Chief Minister at his camp office. Welcoming the Union Minister, the Chief Minister said that the Medical Council of India asked the government to improve infrastructure in medical colleges to increase seats. He said funds to the tune of Rs 1,098 crore were required to improve infrastructure in medical colleges and the Central government should come forward to sanction funds under PMSSY. He said the medical colleges should be upgraded to get additional seats.

Naidu urged the Centre to set up national pharmaceutical education and research centre and medical equipment manufacturing park at Visakhapatnam. He also sought Centre’s help to set up trauma centres in hospitals. He said Rs 56 crore should be sanctioned for laboratory equipment. The Chief Minister appealed to the Union Minister to extend cooperation to set up 3 nursing colleges at a cost of Rs 132 crore, cancer centre at a cost of Rs 250 crore, eye hospital at a cost of Rs 110 crore, ENT hospital at Rs 50 crore and Rs 110 cr to set up a State-level hospital on the lines of Niloufer Hospital, Hyderabad.

Union Ministers Ashok Gajapati Raju, Sujana Chowdary, MP Galla jayadev, Minister Kamineni Srinivas, State government’s special representative Kambhampati Rammohan Rao and others were present. Earlier in a meeting conducted with representatives of corporate sector and officials, the Chief Minister said that the State government would extend cooperation if the corporate companies came forward to set up hospitals in Visaskhapatnam and Tirupati as part of corporate social responsibility. He said the LV Prasad, Aurobindo, and Tata institutions should come forward to set up hospitals. He said that international standards should be introduced in medical education and more number of nursing colleges should be set up to meet the demand.
