Boy kills self over gay taunts

Maredumilli (East Godavari): Unable to bear the insults and taunts by his classmates, a Class IX student of Tribal Welfare Residential School, in Maredumilli village in East Godavari district, died under mysterious circumstances in the early hours of Tuesday.

The deceased was identified as Sankar Reddy (14), a native of Mangampadu village in Y Ramavaram. According to Seetharamaiah, Deputy Director, Tribal Welfare department, the boy in his suicide note mentioned that his friends have been taunting him for being gay.
He said that Sankar, who had been harassed because of his looks, went to the sickroom where another boy was undergoing treatment on Monday night and found tincture available in the room.

Later, Sankar had consumed the tincture in the early hours of Tuesday, he added. Circle Inspector Geetha Ramakrishna, Rampachodavaram said that the traumatised Sankar might have taken the extreme step as he was being taunted by his friends daily. Deputy Director, Tribal Welfare department, asked the police to conduct thorough probe into the death of the student.

Assistant Superintendent of Police, Rampachodavaram, Adnan Nayeem Asni said that the body of the deceased was sent to Rampachodavaram hospital for post-mortem and his parents have been informed about the incident.
