Visakhapatnam: Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation Commissioner Praveen Kumar said that the beautification works pertaining to International Fleet Review has been completed for which Rs 85 crore has been spent. The Central government which bears the expenditure has released Rs 24 crore so far.

Addressing a press conference here on Tuesday, the Commissioner said an amount of Rs 7 crore would be spent for sanitation this week. Around 2,468 sanitary workers have been deployed since Monday who would work round-the-clock till the fleet review was completed.

“We are taking steps to prevent littering in the streets and appealed to the people to maintain cleanliness as a large number of foreign and Indian delegates would be visiting the city during the fleet review,” Praveen Kumar said.

He said over 1.5 lakh people would be assembling for witnessing the events, elaborate arrangements have been made by the corporation. Around 75 enclosures have been created for water, 24 digital screens have been erected at important places so that people can watch the main events live.

Parking facilities have been created at nine places. Water booths have been set up at important places and drinking water facilities have been created at 132 locations.

Similarly, 100 toilets and 150 urinals have been set up near beach area and the corporation will have 50 tankers each having a capacity of 5,000 litres as back up. About 277 supervisory staff in 30 vehicles would be monitoring the sanitation work round-the-clock, the Commissioner said. Three sweeping machines would be deployed for cleaning 292 kilometres road area in the city.

A beach cleaning machine has been procured at a cost of Rs 40 lakh, which would be put into use from February 4 onwards, the Commissioner added. All the officers and staff workers have been given 30 point charter of work which would be their guidelines for keeping the city clean for the next seven days.

“As of now the city is looking beautiful and clean. The nights are illuminated giving a festive look,” he added.
