Eluru: West Godavari district police arrested five burglars and seized five panchaloha idols along with gold and silver ornaments and Rs 9 lakh cash. It is estimated that the idols may cost Rs 14.3 crore.

Bhaskar Bhushan, Superintendent of Police, West Godavari addressing a news conference here on Thursday said that Palacole rural police arrested four persons Mamidisetti Suresh, Katari Sai Kiran Raju, Thotakura Ramakrishnam Raju natives of Matlapalem village in Yalamanchili Mandal and Saddula Kumara Raju of Narsapur.

“The accused are on their way along with five panchaloha idols on a motor bike. The police, who were conducting vehicle checks, found no papers and stopped them to find idols in their possession and took them into custody,” he said.

On interrogation, the accused confessed that they have stolen the idols from Sitarama Temple in Lakshmipalem village in September 2015 and Kodanda Ramalayam in Matlapalem village. The SP added that the four accused also committed burglary in houses in Narsapur division.

“They made vain bid to rob ATMs at Veeravasaram but were successful at Malkipuram village, where they broke open an ATM and escaped with Rs12,000. They tried to sell the idols in Hyderabad and Visakhapatnam but failed to get expected price. The police caught them while they were on their way to seal a deal,” he revealed.

The police recovered 6 sovereigns of gold, one and a half kilograms of silver articles and one Enfield motorbike from the accused.

In another case, the Palacole rural police arrested Pathiwada Ganesh (25) of Amalapuram in East Godavari district. He is wanted for offences committed in Amalapuram and Visakhapatnam and was under surveillance by Amalapuram police. However, he was arrested by Cyberabad police on another offence and on interrogation he confessed his crimes in West Godavari district also.

Upon information, the Palacole rural police brought him to West Godavari. Ganesh committed burglary in Pothuri Siva Annapurnamma’s house Kalagampudi in Elamanchili Mandal of West Godavari district. The police recovered 92 sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs 9 lakh cash.
