Vijayawada: The APSRTC National Mazdoor Union (NMU) emerged victorious in elections and became the recognised union in the corporation history. At State level, the NMU won by 709 votes defeating Employees Union (EU) after the completion of postal ballot for 1,029 votes conducted on February 23 and 24. The Department of Labour will officially declare the recognised union of the corporation on March 4.

The EU which had been the recognised union in the corporation since 2012 had put a tough fight to NMU, besides competing with other six unions in all the depots. In the postal ballot EU received 409 votes. In all, 56,426 voters exercised their franchise in the elections held on February 18 at 129 bus depots located across the State. Out of the total votes, the NMU received 24,708 votes followed by 24,156 votes to EU.

The APSRTC Karmika Parishat affiliated to Telugu Desam Party registered 2,387 votes, the YSR RTC Mazdoor Union secured 863 votes and 2,154 votes for Staff and Workers Federation. As counting of votes began on the same evening of the election, the NMU remained ahead right from the first round in majority of the districts. The NMU retained its lead in all the four zones of Vizianagaram, Vijayawada, Nellore and Kadapa, besides Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, the leaders of EU claimed that cross voting by the unions affiliated to TDP and YSRCP was the major reason for their defeat in the elections this time. But the scenario was different in Krishna district where EU registered victory in the majority of the depots. The EU had won in 11 depots out of the total 16 depots in Krishna district clearly establishing its lead over the NMU.

Meanwhile, the NMU leaders celebrated their victory by distributing sweets and firing crackers at the Pandit Nehru Bus Station premises on Wednesday. Speaking on the occasion, NMU State general secretary Y Srinivasa Rao thanked workers and employees who played a vital role in the victory of the union. Recalling the promises, he said that measures will be taken to merge corporation in the State government and establish a hospital for women, he said.
