Visakhapatnam: Women are in the forefront in all the sectors due to their commitment, leadership qualities and patience, asserted Zilla Parishad Chairperson Lalam Bhavani.

She was addressing the International Women’s Day meeting here on Tuesday. Paying tributes to the late NTR, Bhavani said that he was instrumental in getting equal property rights for women. She further stated that both the Centre and the State governments introduced many welfare schemes for the women’s empowerment. Collector N Yuvaraj said when a woman in a family is happy, the entire family will be happy and the family elders have to teach the children how to respect elders and women in the society.

Collector felicitated Zilla Parishad Chairperson Lalam Bhavani, G Varlakshmi, weightlifter Neelamsetti Lakshmi, Anakapalli RDO Padmavathi and many other government woman employees in recognition of their service to the society.

Meanwhile, awareness meetings, felicitations, competitions and self-defence training marked the International Women’s Day at the government departments, Public Sector Undertakings, educational institutions and voluntary organisations here on Tuesday.

At a meeting convened here on Tuesday at the KGH, superintendent Dr M Madhusudhana Babu while greeting on the occasion, complimented those women for choosing nursing as a profession which has high significance and recognition among all professions. He asked them to rededicate themselves for the best nursing service.

At another meeting held under the aegis of Sri Gayatri Welfare and Cultural Youth Academy, Secretary of District Legal Services Authority Justice R V Nagasundar observed that if a woman in a family is literate, entire family will be developed and thus the entire society.

Stating that the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court is also a woman (Justice Rohini), the secretary asked the women to educate their children for which the government is providing facilities.

As part of the International Women’s Day fete, Axis Bank has organised self-defence training camp at Chaitanya Engineering College to help women resist and protect themselves in times of need. Circle Inspector Narimani dwelt on the women’s safety and protection as well as related laws.

Certified martial art trainers and karate experts imparted training to the students. Bank head Sanjay Silas said this was the first time the bank is creating awareness in martial arts and the branch manager Lakshmikanth said the bank is conducting similar camps in 154 locations in 21 major cities across the country. Chaitanya Engineering College Principal Ramjee thanked the bank staff for their initiative.

Chairman and Managing Director of Vizag Steel Plant P Madhusudan at a meeting held a the plant said that women are playing a vital role in demonstrating high competence equal to men in all spheres. Even in the major Steel Plant, he said the women employees are working at many key operational areas with commitment and assured of all help for their development.

Woman employees of Eastern Naval Command visited Teresa Children Home, Pedagantyada and presented utility items to the inmates on the occasion of the International Women’s Day. A large number of Service and Civilian woman employees of Headquarters, Eastern Naval Command were presemt.
