Nellore: Are development drive and concomitant security measures driving away fishermen from Nellore coast? A majority of families from the fishing community are searching for alternative source of livelihood. They are either being evacuated by the government or relocating voluntarily to other parts of the district as part of R&R package.

In future, there would be little chance for their existence since they have to face huge security measures every day amid tens of thermal plants, ports and highly secured places like Space Launching Centre. In the worst case if they dare to reside there they need to face unbearable pollution levels that will naturally drive them away to other places.

“People from fishing community have voluntarily sold out their lands, houses and other properties in Muthukur mandal some time ago when Krishnapatnam port was proposed. They failed to understand future difficulties for livelihood and now they are vacating the houses that were constructed by the government.

There is no drinking water owing to increased levels of salinity and the Port is supplying as part of CSR,” said K Venkata Ramana, a youth leader from the community. With the upcoming power plants, new major port at Dugarajapatnam besides existing Krishnapatnam port, SHAR and various industrial units at the coast, traditional fishermen who have been relying on fishing activity are trying to find alternative source of livelihood.

In future, there would be focus on coastal protection that would worsen the scenario. The district has a coastal line of 169 km covering 12 mandals from Tada to Kavali and there are 93 fishermen habitations with a total population of 82,500. In these habitations, there are 16,300 active marine fishermen.

Coal-based thermal power plants require coal and water. Inland coal power plants use vast quantities of water and create pressure on scarce fresh water resources. Sea water also plays significant role in the plants for cooling purposes.
