Vizianagaram: Meagre allocations to major irrigation projects in north Andhra in the Budget drew fire from every section. With frugal allocations to projects like Thotapalli, Jhanjhavathi, Vamsadhara, farmers are expressing their displeasure.

Despite the tall claims by the government that it would complete Thotapalli project soon, the less allocations make realisation of the project a far cry. The same can be said about Jhanjhavathi, for which only Rs 4 crore was allocated despite the authorities sending estimates of Rs 40 crore. Taraka Rama Teertha Sagar, a key project to provide drinking water to Vizianagaram town is also neglected.

If the project is completed, around 40,000 acres will be irrigated apart from providing drinking water to the entire town. Interestingly, Uttarandhra Sujala Sravanthi project, which was proposed to be constructed with Rs 7,200 crore to provide water to 10 lakh acres in north Andhra got only Rs 3 crore.

Same can be said about Raiwada, an important project in Vizag. Vamsadhara project in Srikakulam, which is slated to provide water to more than one lakh acres was allocated Rs 7 crore despite the authorities sending estimates worth Rs 50 crore.

A senior irrigation Engineer admitted that they cannot complete the projects in time with these allocations. Speaking to The Hans India, Bobbili MLA RVSK Ranga Rao lashed out against the CM for meagre allocations to irrigation projects. “CM has announced that he would complete Thotapalli by the end of 2015 but it didn’t happen. How can he hope to complete projects in north Andhra with meagre funds,” he questioned.
