Tirupati: The students of SV Agricultural College here staged a dharna on Monday, protesting the State government move to allow private agricultural colleges and also offering graduate courses in agriculture under distant mode. As part of the statewide stir, the students boycotted the classes and resorted to protest which culminated into a rasta roko.

They raised slogans against the State government and the officials of the Agriculture University in particular, accusing them of diluting the professional course standards and also affecting the interests of the graduates of BSc (agriculture).

Students, who were protesting, said that the students were admitted to BSc (agriculture) only after they are qualified in EAMCET and study the course for four years including practical, field study and experiments and added that offering the course under distant mode will not only produce sub-standard graduates but also hit the interests of the regular students.

Further, allowing private agricultural colleges in the long run prove inimical to the state run colleges and accused the government trying to wash of its hands from the responsibility of running the agricultural colleges. They demanded the government to withdraw its proposal to allow private colleges and introducing agriculture graduate course in distance mode.
