Vijayawada: Scorching temperatures have been playing havoc with the lives of people in the city. Lack of shade has emerged a concern for pedestrians, hawkers and motorists. People involved in petty works like labour, hamalees are beaten by the beaming sun. Recently, a degree second year student from Kondapalli died due to the sun stroke.

Though the State government has massive plans for green cover and city beautification using flowering trees, the basic feature of the tree, providing shade, is deprived of. Huge trees are being cut down at important junctions of the city owing to the developing projects. Dividers at the M G road and Mother Theresa junction are beautified with colorful crotons in vibrant colors, which undoubtedly added to the beauty of the roads and posh buildings.

However, there is no shade for the commuters or pedestrians. With large and old trees being chopped off, the green cover is reducing in the city. Earlier, Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu called upon the city women to take to gardening and increase the green cover in city to reduce temperature affects this summer.

Meanwhile, government is going ahead to carry out development works that require cutting of trees. The Municipal authorities have not taken up activity of planting saplings or sowing seeds anywhere besides CM’s initiation. A very few colonies in the city are actually covered with big trees. Majority of the areas are very narrow with corporate and domestic constructions coming up.

There is also an increase in the number of apartments that are being built in the heart of the city. Environmentalists from the city opine that reducing green cover is a major factor that enhanced the heat conditions that are prevailing in the city. “We had an early summer this time with more intensity. We can witness trees being cut off for various purposes.

We should realise that concrete structures can be built and destroyed in days but to raise a plant into a tree will take many years. Huge trees which are very old should be preserved,” said G Pratima, an active gardener and member of organic terrace farming group.
