NTPC joins hands with forest dept to protect Olive Ridley turtles

On Tuesday, P K Bondriya, Group General Manger, NTPC Simhadri, and S B L Misra, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), AP, signed the MoU at Aranya Bhavan in Hyderabad.

Hyderabad: An MoU was signed between NTPC and Forest Department, AP, for conservation and protection of Olive Ridley sea turtles, the endangered species from extinction.
Under its CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) and Sustainable Development Initiative, the NTPC-Simhadri unit on Tuesday joined hands with Forest Department for conservation of these turtles along the sea coast of nine districts in AP.
The coastal beaches in the State are important nesting places for the sea turtles. Sporadic nesting occurs on these beaches. Three species have been recorded in AP, including Olive Ridley. While Olive Ridley is common on the beaches, the Green Turtle and Hawksbill are seen occasionally.
NTPC is contributing Rs 4.6 crore for this five-year conservation project including inventory mapping of breeding sites of sea turtles, identification of nesting and breeding habitats along the shore line, and migratory routes taken by sea turtles, development of guidelines to safeguard and minimise turtle mortality, development of local and national cooperative and collaborative action for sea turtle conservation.
On Tuesday, P K Bondriya, Group General Manger, NTPC Simhadri, and S B L Misra, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (PCCF), AP, signed the MoU at Aranya Bhavan in Hyderabad.
Ramesh G Kalaghatgi, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, AP, V Shiva Prasad, Head of HR Dept of NTPC Simhadri, and other senior officials were also present on the occasion.
Bondriya handed over a cheque for Rs 1 crore for carrying out the work of conservation in AP for the current financial year. After signing the MoU, he said that as a responsible corporate citizen, NTPC shares its concern and commitment to the cause of protection of bio-diversity and conservation of sea turtles in the coastal districts of Andhra Pradesh.
The conservation project envisages involving local communities, NGOs, Forest Department and other stake holders in protection and conservation of nests. This project provides livelihood to many through construction and repairing of hatcheries, awareness campaigns and knowledge sharing in nine districts.
