In a ten-minute endoscopy procedure, an open safety pin was removed from the food pipe valve of an 18-month-old baby at Sateesh Gastro & Liver Center recently. Talking to the news men here, Gastroenterologist Javvaji Satish said that Manyata, a resident of Nuzividu, had accidentally swallowed the open pin that was lying on a table at her residence.
She began to feel discomfort as the pin was lodged at the junction of his food pipe valve and stomach. The parents of the baby rushed her to a local X-ray clinic and found that the open pin was causing him pain. Immediately, the parents admitted the baby in the hospital where suggested an endoscopy. "We wanted to have the pin removed non-surgically.
“The baby’s food pipe is very small. Hence, it is difficult to pull a foreign body out, and if we had tried to push it down, it could have scraped the wall and caused bleeding,” he explained. The endoscopy procedure took ten minutes and the baby was discharged within 12 hours of admission.
“We urge parents to be more careful with safety pins. This procedure is simpler and we appeal to parents not to get involved in complicated surgeries. The baby is recovering well and will be normal in next few days, he added.
