Vijayawada: The Left Parties here on Friday came down heavily on the ruling TDP and YSRCP corporators for wasting the public money in the name of study tours to select towns and cities in North India at an estimated cost of Rs 30 lakh. Talking to the newsmen, CPM city secretary Donepudi Kasinath said precious money of public would be squandered if the corporators went on such an expensive tour.

  • Kasinath said that earlier corporators had study tours to nearby cities and had not even bothered to study the way other cities were providing basic amenities

They could learn a lot from the towns and the cities nearby. He alleged that nothing worthwhile had been achieved even though the corporators undertook two visits to different cities. “They didn’t even discuss in the general body meeting what they saw during their tour”, he said.

Kasinath said that earlier also corporators had study tours to nearby cities and had not even bothered to study the way other cities were providing basic amenities. The TDP ruled VMC council had promised to roll back the drinking water and drainage charges up to 7 percent which was hiked during the special officer’s rule but in vain.

Meanwhile, CPI city secretary Donepudi Shankar questioned that how VMC can conduct study tour for corporators though it was facing severe revenue deficit of Rs 350 crore. He alleged that Mayor Koneru Sridhar and Municipal commissioner G Veera Pandian for their indifference over implementing the genuine demands of the municipal workers who were agitating over the issue for a long time.

The TDP ruling council in their 24 months governance is not even pursued the issue seriously to safeguard the interests of the municipal workers, instead, it has been appointing private sanitation workers on a daily wage basis to clear garbage in the city, he criticised.
