Tirupati: A combing party of the Forest department on Saturday recovered 23 logs of red sanders worth Rs 50 lakh in Kenibanda area, 15 km away from Tirumala.

According to Tirumala Forest Range Officer Venkata Swamy, a combing party which was engaged in intense search operation against red sander smuggling spotted a group of 20 smugglers in Kenzibanda forest area. The smugglers ignored the forest staff requests to surrender and in turn attacked the police by hurling stones and pick axes, forcing the forest combing party open fire one round to deter them.

The smugglers retreated into the deep forest leaving behind the red sander logs they were carrying, which were later recovered, Venkata Swamy explained. The combing is still on in Tirumala forest, he added.
