Chittoor: District Medical and Health Officer (DMHO) Dr K Koteswari said on Saturday that vaccination drive against Japanese Encephalitis (JE), a dreadful disease, would be organised for ten days beginning from May 9. As part of vaccination drive, 10.95 lakh children in the age group of 1 to 15 would be covered across the district, she added. Speaking to the media here, the DMHO said that action plan has drawn for effective implementation of JE vaccination programme in the district.

Koteswari stated that vaccine camps would be set up in government and private schools besides Anganwadi centres. “Children in the age group of 1 to 15 years are prone to Japanese Encephalitis attack and there is no medicine to cure this viral disease,” the DMHO said. Koteswari said 500 teams would cover entire district. She pointed out that each team would comprise of 6 medical staff and 20 additional DMHOs would be supervising JE vaccination drive.

The medical official said that District Collector Siddharth Jain has issued orders to DRDA Project Director, District Educational Officer, District Panchayat Officer, ICDS Project Director, Municipal Health Officers and other officials concerned to take active part in the vaccination drive. Koteswari said that the JE vaccination is free from all side effects. The DMHO stated that training was imparted to 1,000 vaccinators during an orientation programme held recently. She advised vaccinators not to administer JE vaccine for those children, who are suffering from fever and infectious diseases. Also, malnourished children and those who are suffering from ailments like tuberculosis, kidneys, heart and liver should not be given vaccination, she said.

The DMHO made an appeal to all the elected representatives to give wide publicity to vaccination drive and make it a grand success. District Immunisation Officer Dr Surekha, District Malaria Officer Dr Dodda Reddy and other officials were present.
