It may be recalled here that the then Minister of State for Railways Kotla Surya Prakash Reddy had sanctioned the workshop for Kurnool in 2013 during UPA regime with a budgetary allocation of Rs 282 crore. The proposed workshop would boost the socio-economic progress of the region and would also herald development of industry in the area.

Kurnool: A top official source revealed that the Ministry of Railways had given a green signal for the construction of coach mid-life rehabilitation workshop to come up at Panchalingala and E Thandrapadu (three km from Alampur railway station) in Kurnool district. Tenders will also be invited soon for the construction of the workshop.

The land for workshop measures 143 acres with approach road to Bangalore- Hyderabad National Highway. The land is provided free of cost by Government of Andhra Pradesh. It has rail connectivity from Alampur railway station.

The land was handed over to Railway Workshop Projects Organisation (RWPO). The project design and tenders were pending which would be completed soon as and when the Railways gives green signal.

Meanwhile, the State government and MPs were said to be pressurising the Railways for running a train connecting Amaravati to New Delhi. It seems the request from the State government was dropped as the laying of new line to Amaravati would take some time, the sources said.
Based on a proposal for running a train to Amaravati, Railways said that a train could be flagged off from New Delhi-Vijayawada or Guntur but without a well-equipped workshop, it is not possible to run the train.

As of now, there is no such workshop, so the Railway officials have planned to set up a workshop at Krishna Canal Junction or at Nallapadu. With this move, there is every chance of running the Rajadhani Express to Andhra Pradesh soon after the construction of the workshop.
