Tirupati: Andhra Pradesh Legislative Council Assurance Committee (APLCAC) objected to the Tamil Nadu government issuing origin certificate’ with respect to red sanders and wanted the State government to take steps to ensure that Tamil Nadu does not issue origin certificate to the precious wood which is endemic to the Seshachalam forests of Kadapa and Chittoor district in the State.

The Assurance Committee during its meeting on Friday with the district officials led by collector Siddharth Jain, reviewed various issues including red sanders smuggling and placed on record its appreciation of the officials engaged in curtailing the smuggling of the precious wood in Chittoor district.

In this connection, the committee opined that Tamil Nadu has no right to issue origin certificate to red sanders as it was not grown in any of the forests in that State and was confined to Seshachalam forests.

Committee chairman G Muddu Krishnama Naidu told the media that the committee will write to the government for taking the necessary steps to stop Tamil Nadu from issuing origin certificate to red sanders.

The committee while reviewing the issue of smuggling of red sanders noted the delay in disposing of the seized vehicles and directed the forest officials to take steps for public auction of the seized vehicles, which were used to smuggle the rare wood.

Naidu said that hundreds of seized vehicles were left to rust in the open at various places, as the forest department had no facility to safeguard them.

He directed the forest officials to dispose of the vehicles in public auction within three months.Forest officials informed the committee that the process for the auctioning of as many as 250 vehicles had begun and said the other vehicles too would be disposed of soon.

The committee asked the government to relieve Iskcon from the task of supplying mid-day meals in State-run schools and entrust the job to the women’s SHG groups to provide healthier food to the children, including eggs. The committee also asked the government to widen the Puthalapattu-Naidupeta highway and set up a tribal welfare hostel in Karakambadi.

Naidu said that Chittoor district was at the forefront in implementing the assurances given to the members in the Council. Officials from Task Force, Municipal Corporation of Tirupati, Tribal Welfare and other departments were present.
