Anantapur: The district CPI leaders embarked on a 'Jala Deeksha' touching Jeedipalle reservoir and Penna Ahobilam Balancing Reservoir (PABR) dam to focus attention on the water requirements of the district both for drinking water and irrigation purposes.

A host of CPI district leaders, who participated in the deeksha, demanded that the government to issue a GO for releasing 3 tmcft of water from Handri-Neeva project phase one to PABR left canal for filling 50 village irrigation tanks in the left canal purview. They also demanded the government to lay a link canal from Jeedipalle reservoir to PABR dam.

The CPI leaders said that water to 50 tanks in Uravakonda, Singanamala, Dharmavaram, Raptadu and other constituencies should be released and a GO should be issued to that effect. In the past, a GO was issued by the previous government for releasing of 10 tmcft of water from Tungabhadra project to Anantapur but the order remained on paper.

Water supply from Tungabhadra dam started declining due to accumulation of silt in the reservoir. Water storage capacity of the reservoir was also eroded and so was the supply to PABR dam. The leaders demanded that in the best interest of the
district, a GO should immediately be issued for release of 3 tmcft of water from Jeedipalle reservoir.

During the recent visit of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu to the district, he announced that Handri-Neeva project water would be supplied to Bairavanithippa and Perur projects.

He also announced funds for digging a canal to the projects. He pointed out that the water supply to PABR left canal tanks was totally ignored. After the completion of second phase of Handri-Neeva project, no water to PABR will be released.

In the context, the CPI leaders insisted on their demand that a link canal from Jeedipalle reservoir to PABR be constructed.
The leaders also stated that since water is allocated from Handri-Neeva to Kuppam, Bairavanithippa and Perur, water allocation to Handri-Neeva should be increased from 40 tmcft to 80tmcft.

Besides, the Handri-Neeva canal capacity should be increased from 2,300 cusecs to 4,000 cusecs. The canal should be broadened to facilitate higher flow of water. Several CPI leaders including C Jaffer, C Mallikarjuna, Lingamaiah, Katamaiah, A Padmavathi, Aruna and other leaders participated.
