Vizianagaram:Despite Vizianagaram being included in the list of smart cities, no work has been initiated in that direction. Though the government had promised to upgrade the town and provide facilities of international standards, it has not even been upgraded into municipal corporation so far.

The civic amenities are so bad that the town is facing water scarcity and drinking water is being supplied on alternative days. The government needs to spend more funds on Tarakarama Theertha Sagar project so that it can supply drinking water on a daily basis. Even the town doesn’t have proper drainage system and the drain water is flooding onto the roads even if there is a small shower. Road widening works also failed to take off.

What is interesting that even though Civil Aviation Minister P Ashok Gajapathi Raju had directed the district administration to widen the main road, Ananda Gajapathi Road to 60 feet, the work had not yet started.

The town planning staff has marked the road but things did not move further. Fogging by the municipal administration has never been seen in the recent past leading to mosquito menace.

The traffic police are unable to regulate movement of vehicles on narrow roads as the vehicular traffic has increased in the past few years. A retired bank officer P Seetharama Sarma said, “I have been in the town since my childhood but I don’t see any change till date.

I thought the government will take steps to develop the town under Smart City programme, but so far, there has been no progress in this aspect,” he added.

Municipal chairman P Ramakrishna said, “We have sent proposals to the government to grant funds for town’s development. We are waiting for it and soon after getting funds, we will take necessary steps to develop the town in all aspects.”
