Vijayawada: Central funds Polavaram project still elude. The State government had spent Rs 1,800 crore on the project so far while the Central government had given only Rs 100 crore. Though the project is part of the AP Reorganisation Act, the Center’s support in terms of financial assistance does not indicate the completion of the project by 2018.

Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, who conducted a virtual inspection of the project on Thursday, said that the Central government had given him Rs 100 crore so far. He demanded that the remaining Rs 1,700 crore be released immediately. This would help in completing the project as per schedule.

After the virtual inspection of the Polavaram project works using drone technology that was adopted in the just-concluded Krishna Pushkaralu, Naidu said that the project can be completed as per the schedule only if the Centre extended financial support to the State at the same speed that it was executing the works at the project site.

The Chief Minister interacted with Minister for Water Resources Devineni Umamaheswara Rao, engineers and supervisors positioned at the project site. The Chief Minister said that he would use the technology to review the progress of the irrigation projects and also various other developmental works across the State.

The Chief Minister said that they have cleared 4.2 crore cubic metres of earth at the Polavaram project site against the target of 10.49 crore cubic metres and asked the engineers and contractors to speed up the work. He also reviewed the progress of the works for construction of diaphragm wall as part of the project and asked the engineers to clear the 1.2 lakh cubic metres earth. He said that the government was spending over Rs 300 crore a month on earth works at the project.
