Jammalamadugu (Kadapa): The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bus depot here is incurring a cumulative loss of Rs 9 crore per annum. The trade unions attribute the losses to mindless decisions taken by the depot management. According to The Hans
India investigation, the depot, whose daily loss of revenue is put at Rs 2.25 lakh, was built in the town in 1977. Initially, the depot earned profits. Subsequently, it is incurring losses because of the bad decisions.
The depot workers openly blame it on the decisions taken by the managers. They point out that not a single bus of the fleet of 40 buses in the depot is in good condition. Losses of the depot are increasing daily because of the authorities changing the bus routes according to their whims and fancies without taking the trade unions and their leaders into confidence.
Currently, the depot’s accumulated losses are piling up and officials are not in a position to say when it will fully turn around. National Mazdoor Union secretary Sudhakar noted that the Jammalamadugu bus depot used to occupy second place in the district in terms of revenue. Slowly it slipped and accumulated the losses.
Quoting an example, he said that a bus service used to run from Proddutur to Bangalore via Erraguntla. The bus service’s occupancy ratio was 85 per cent. The previous regional manager decided to operate the service via Muddanur with a poor occupancy ratio of only 40 per cent. The depot was pushed into losses because of many more such thoughtless decisions.
Moreover, the RTC buses are facing stiff competition from illegal transport services. Further, he said workers of the two trade unions are ready to check activities of illegal services being plied by private transport service operators.
He also blamed the motor vehicles’ inspectors’ casual approach in fulfilling their duties. He appealed to the motor vehicles’ inspectors to check illegally plying transport services so that the bus depot will earn profits.
Trade union leader BG Reddy said that there are allegations that illegally plying private vehicles, running two bus services on a single permit, commuters craze for private bus services and so on are contributing to the bus depot’s losses.
He pointed out commuters will get compensation in case of road accident, whereas it is not the case with private bus services operators.
Depot manager Venkatasubbaiah clarifies that the depot runs 40 RTC services and 35 under hire to the RTC. He admitted that the depot is incurring losses for quite some time. To overcome the losses, the depot is planning to run the services on profitable routes.
